Gun Control Kills

In January 2006, the Virginia General Assembly voted down a proposed law to allow the possession of guns on college campus by those who are licensed to carry them. How many of the 32 (and counting) dead might have been saved if not for the mind-boggling ignorance of gun control zealots, who deprived law-abiding students of the ability to protect themselves while understanding full well that the defining characteristic of criminals is the predicable disregard of exactly those sorts of rules?

From the link...

Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker was happy to hear the bill was defeated. "I'm sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly's actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus."
Nothing makes ME feel safer than knowing that someone can shoot at me without fear of having someone shoot back.

Idiots.

About Time

I finally upgraded to Windows Vista, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that they integrated my favorite XP Power Tool--"Open Command Window Here"--directly into the OS.  Holding shift and right clicking on a folder includes some special menu items, one of which opens the console.

Also, they finally--finally--allow you to specify a larger width for the console.  You still can't drag to resize it, but at least you can go into properties and set it to 160 columns of something.

Both changes are LONG overdue, and might make development in windows a bit less annoying.

EDIT: Hmmm... it looks like the resizing of the console has always been there.  It's actually implemented in the most annoying way possible.

NEWSFLASH: Rudy Giuliani Might Have a Slightly Different Perspective on the Price of Bread Than You

Well, no shit:

But when asked about more mundane matters — like the price of some basic staples — Giuliani had trouble with a reporter's question.

"A gallon of milk is probably about a $1.50, a loaf of bread about a $1.25, $1.30," he said.

A check of the Web site for D'Agostino supermarket on Manhattan's Upper East Side showed a gallon of milk priced at $4.19 and a loaf of white bread at $2.99 to $3.39. In Montgomery, Ala., a gallon of milk goes for about $3.39 and bread is about $2.

The price of the bread, as a fraction of his net worth, is on the order of  10-8.  Certainly no reasonable person would expect him to know the precise figure, especially since anyone who isn't spectacularly stupid understands that Rudy, himself, probably hasn't run to the grocery store to pick up a loaf of bread in in a decade.

That said, I seriously would have guessed about the same numbers, and I bought bread like... yesterday.

Up and Running

I'm working on getting a template that is reasonable looking, so I'll probably have lots of "filler" posts just to get some content up.  In the long run, I really don't know what will end up here... I want to write just to maintain some level of writing skill, so I'll probably talk a bit about geeky software-related stuff, as well as politics, pop culture, or whatever else comes to mind.

Now, I should officially have 2 posts up.
